Dear
Pastor and brethren at
Bible
Baptist
Church,
Warm
Christian greetings from the mission field of
Cambodia.
May the abundance of the Lord’s blessings be upon you all.
We thank you all for your fervent and unceasing prayers. It
just feels so good to be back where the Lord wants us to be. We arrived
back here in
Phnom
Penh
last January. We are excited to see our Cambodian brethren growing strong
and faithful in the Lord.
Both of our two churches are doing fine except for a drastic
drop in attendance at
Grace Baptist Church – Anlong
K’ngan due to external causes. Over the last three
years, about 10 more churches or church groups sprang up out of the
community. Other than their teachings being weird, their methods of
church planting are unique too. Some of these groups give bags of
groceries, rice and even cash to those who attend their church services.
Some groups even built houses for the people who go to their churches.
Worst of all, they have tried to lure some of our men and sad to say; some
have swallowed the bait.
The good news is we still
have good men and women who come to church not because of material gains
but because they have learned to value the truth and teachings from God’s
Word. These are like those who did not bow the knee to
Baal during Elijah’s time. Last February 6 a girl in her late teens got
saved. Praise the Lord.
Our Bible college students have been working hard during our
absence. They were able to maintain the attendance and have brought in
more people to
Grace Baptist Church – Phnom
Penh. Last February 6, we baptized two men. These men
have been coming to church for quite a long time but never decided to be
baptized. After much teaching by our preachers they decided it is God’s
will for them to get baptized and they did!
We will be moving this week to live with the children at
Living
Waters Children’s Home. These children have started
calling me Papa and Daisy Mama since we took over the administration of
the home last year. Our youngest son,
Paul, had
always wanted to have younger siblings when he was much smaller. Well, in
a strange way, his wish is granted. He will be the big brother for
14
Cambodian orphan children!
The
9 children
at the
Power of Grace Children’s Home are all in good health
and enjoying living in the orphanage. Not only has their physical
countenance changed but they are also growing to be fine mannered young
people. Most of them have already professed salvation and we are
preparing the bigger ones for baptism in the next few weeks.
As of this writing, I have already made several trips back and
forth to several government offices submitting all sorts of documents for
our non-government organization. Some offices have moved to different
locations while some of the people I am trying to contact have been either
promoted to a higher position or were move to another department. Well,
that is life in these parts!
Thank you very much for all your faithful support and fervent
prayers. We are able to keep on in the ministry of reaching Cambodians
with the Gospel because of your love and care for us. In spite of some
inconveniences, ministering here in
Cambodia
has been very fulfilling because of your precious encouragements. It is
our earnest prayer that God will richly recompense your labor of love
shown to His servants.
Yours for Cambodian souls,

Dear Pastor Martin and
brethren at Grace Baptist Church,
It is really exciting to see how the
Lord is working here in the field of Cambodia. We know
that much of these great victories are the direct results of your
unceasing prayers. We appreciate you all very much for all
that you do and continue to do not just for us but for the whole
nation of Cambodia as well.
Our Youth Camp last week was so far
the best camp ever! We had a total of 246
young people from 19 churches and mission works.
7 souls got saved and 19 new believers were
baptized and added to 3 of the churches
who participated. Except for the rains and strong wind on our first
evening, the weather was real cooperative the rest of the camp. The
missionaries took turns in presenting the Word of God and in
challenging the campers. Every invitation time the front of our
podium was always filled with young men and women making decisions and
commitments to the Lord. 38 campers presented themselves to
go to Bible College in the future. We look forward to
seeing many of them when Bible College reopens this October.
I don't think there ever was a camp
where there were no problems! Yes, we did have some of them this
year! The place we used was good only for 200 people maximum so
we were somewhat crowded. Our cooks were prepared to
serve 180 people only! Well, both problems were a blessing as the
crowdedness of the rooms brought the campers closer to each other while
the lack in manpower in the kitchen was helped filled by many
willinghearted campers. Our theme for the camp was "Discovering
God". Many campers, I believe, found God as
they exercised tolerance toward each other in a crowded room
and in serving each other at the dinner table as much as they did in listening
to the powerful messages delivered.
Grace Baptist Church, Phnom Penh is
doing fine. Aside from Daisy and I, we had 24 delegates
to the camp. 2 young men surrendered to go to
Bible College. We are praying and preparing for our 5th
church anniversary on October 6, 2002. Dr.
Don Stone, missionary in Hong Kong will be our special speaker.
Improvements on the property for Grace
Baptist Church, Anlong K'ngan is quite slow going. We
already have the fencing plans drawn but the contractor did not
show up to close the deal on doing the job. We really need a good
contractor to do this so please help pray that we will find a good one
for the job. Please help pray also for sufficient funds for
the project. We appreciate very much those of you who
have already given for this project.
We are still praying for the best timing
for Daisy's surgery. We
know that it is something that needs to be done but there are various
concerns that we need to consider. By the Lord's blessing,
Daisy has not been in pain for a month now. Thank you very
much for your prayers for her. Please help us pray for
clear guidance as to when to have the surgery and also for the
Lord's provisions for it. It is our intention to have the surgery
done on the third week of August but we still do not seem to have perfect
peace for it.
Again, thanks to everyone of you for taking
interest in what the Lord is doing here in Cambodia.
Your partnership with us through prayers and financial support is a great
blessing and encouragement. We pray and trust God that you
are being abundantly blessed as well.
Yours for Cambodian souls,
Mike, Daisy, Tj, Mikee & Paul

Dear Pastor Martin and
brethren at Grace Baptist Church,
We praise and thank God for His
wonderful blessings upon us and the ministry here in Cambodia. July
2002 will always be a memorable milestone for us all here.
Last July 10, 18 students
walked the platform of the Cambodia Baptist Bible College
to receive their diplomas for satisfactory completion of 3 years of study
and training for ministry. These 18 students are
our very first graduates at CBBC. 2 of the
graduates, a young man named Pilot, and a young
lady named Phallly are members of Grace Baptist
Church. Let us rejoice in the Lord together
for these first fruits of our working cooperation with each other in
reaching Cambodians with the Gospel and in their training to be able to
reach their fellow Cambodians.
Last July 14, 8 souls followed
the Lord in believers baptism. 2 young ladies
baptized are the daughters of Bro. Dara. Bro.
Dara and his wife were the first married couple we led to the
Lord and baptized here at GBC, Phnom Penh. The
other 6 adults are from Srey Ambel,
a small town nestled among the hills 160 kilometers away
from Phnom Penh. These 6 adults ( 2 couples, an
old lady and a middle aged man) make up the core group for the
third church we are involved in starting.
Next week (July 29 - August 1), the missionaries
and their families with about 160 or more young people
will be taking the 240 kilometer trip to the seaport city of Kampong
Saom or Sihanoukville for our annual Youth
Camp. This is the third year in a row that I am doing the
job of Camp Director. It is hard and exhausting work but the
results are always well satisfying. It is always a joy for
us to see our young people and young people from other churches renew
commitments to the Lord, surrender for ministry and make other
life-changing decisions at camp. Please pray for safe
traveling mercies, good weather and for the preaching of the Word
of God to have a powerful impact on our young people.
Please help pray for Daisy
as we are going to Bangkok to have surgery for her hemorrhoids
on the second or third week of August. An American lady doctor here
recommends that this procedure be done outside of Cambodia. We
would like to have the surgery done in the Philippines but we
figured that timewise, it is more beneficial to have the surgery in
Thailand. Please help pray for the Lord's provisions for this
need and the success of the surgery. Many times in the past, Daisy
has had continual bleeding and has been in severe pain. It is
our prayer that Daisy will be well and that she
will be released from the pain and discomfort that often hinders her from
fulfilling her varied ministries as mother and missionary wife.
We appreciate you all very much
for your unceasing prayers for us and for your sacrifices in
order to be a part in the task of bringing more Cambodians into
the saving knowledge of our Lord and in their training for the ministry.
We are all looking forward to
seeing Pastor Martin and the other brethren next year. We
are praying for all of you there. May the Lord's blessings be upon
you all.
Yours for Cambodia,
Mike Valdez and family

Subject: Pictures!
Dear Bro. Bruce and family,
Here are the pictures. I did something not quite right that is
why these
pix are a little bit small. The benefit is I can send several
of them in
one mail! I hope you will not need a magnifying glass to be
able to view them.
I talked to the lady in charge of reservations at the Intercon.
She said
she needs to consult with her boss about more discounts. She is
supposed
to give me the final quotations tomorrow or Monday. Perhaps we
will just
plan on the higher end of the expenses for a better margin of safety.
We are
excited about your coming and we are praying for it to be a
tremendous
blessing for us all. Thank you very much for your great concern
and
ceaseless promotions for the work here.
Thank you very much for your desire to be of help with Daisy's
problem.
We are still in prayers about what to do exactly. Her situation is
just like
having a sore tooth. When you are in pain, you want to have it
fixed
immediately and when it is not bothering much, you would like to wait
because there are so many other things pressing on you to be done and
you
are somewhat scared of the doctor too! We are still inquiring
about the
actual medical and hospital costs for this to be done in Bangkok.
We are
planning to take an overland trip so our 3 boys can go also.
There are
missionary friends with whom they can stay while Daisy and I will
stay in
the hospital. Coming back to Phnom Penh, Daisy with either TJ
or Mikee
will take the plane and I will take the other two boys with me by land
trip.
We did this before when we had to exit for visa reasons.
Please continue to pray for us and many ministry opportunities we are
facing
here. Please pray that problems like Daisy's case will make us
better
servants. Although they cause inconveniences, we know that
whatever God
allows us to go through are always the best for us.
We will be praying for your new Sunday school class. Maybe you can
send us
pictures of your class also.
God bless and take care.
Yours in Him,
Mike

Dear Pastor Martin and brethren at Grace Baptist
Church,
We trust that this finds you all overflowing
with the blessings and joy of the Lord Jesus Christ whom we all serve.
The rainy season is causing the road to
Anlong K'ngan to be very muddy. Travel is becoming more and more
difficult. However, we praise God that the road was still
passable last Sunday. There were 42 fathers who
attended and 3 of them professed Christ as Savior. Please help pray
for Bro. Ken Nielsen as he and our staff will be going to do the
preaching and the teaching in Anlong K'ngan this Sunday.
We have just finished filling 25% of the
property in Anlong K'ngan. We would like to fill the whole plot of
land now but we are trying to stretch our present resources in order to
be able to put up a fence and build a temporary meeting place as well.
The baptistry we want to build is long overdue and we like that to be built
soon so we can go ahead and baptize those who are ready to be baptized.
At GBC-Toul Tompoung, we had 13 fathers come to
church last Sunday. Although Mr. San did not respond to the Gospel
invitation, his son, Vanni who is a Bible college student is very
happy that his father finally came to church. Vanni has been
praying for the salvation of his father for a long time now. Please
help pray for Mr. San's salvation.
Cambodia Baptist Bible College will be having
its first graduation in less than a month. Two members of our
church, Pilot and Phally are among 18 students who will be
participating in the graduation exercises.
Please help pray for Daisy. She has been
having rectal bleeding for almost a week now. Dr. Castro recommends
surgery to fix the problem permanently. Please help pray that
the treatment she is getting now will help her to be able to hold up
until school is finished at the end of this month. She is not in
serious pain but bleeds every time she goes to the bathroom.
We appreciate very much your prayers and support
for us and the ministry here. May more of the Lord's blessings be
poured out upon you all.
Yours for Cambodia,
Mike Valdez

Dear Prayer Partners,
May the Lord's abounding blessings be
upon you all.
The past month has been a month filled
both with rapid succession of activities and great blessings from
the Lord. Aside from her regular load in our Missionary children's
school, Daisy also taught for the first time at Cambodia
Baptist Bible College. She was apprehensive at the
beginning but in the end she did a very commendable job.
I just finished teaching my 6th and last block
in the college too. Just 3 more blocks and CBBC will
have it's first graduation ceremonies. We
have 19 students who are hopeful of receiving
their certificates this July 10, 2002. I believe
the excitement of Team Cambodia far exceeds the
excitement of the students. This is not just a
milestone in the lives of our students but this is also a major
milestone in our calling and ministry here as well. Without
your faithful support and unceasing prayers these victories would not
have been possible. We praise God for your steadfastness in
holding the rope for us. We understand that it hasn't always been easy
and we appreciate you very much for helping bear the burden.
Grace Baptist Church, Phnom Penh
is on the upswing again. Our expanded meeting place seemed small
again for several Sundays. Please help pray that we will be able
to sustain the growth and keep on growing. Four
new members were baptized in the month of May.
Grace Baptist Church, Anlong K'ngan continues
to see souls saved almost every week. Our planned ground-breaking
and construction did not push through as scheduled because of the slow
paperwork on the permits. We will have to delay our scheduled
baptism for the brethren there. Some of our candidates for
baptism are getting impatient but we believe we all need the
delay for whatever the Lord has intended it for. The
coming rainy season will surely affect a lot of our activities there
and so please help us pray that this will not affect the enthusiasm of
our people.
Please help pray for the following:
1. Finances for a
church building at GBC-Anlong K'ngan.
2. Better facilities
for our Missionary children's school.
3. Our family's
health - specially Daisy's
4. College graduation
on July 10, 2002
5. Youth Camp 2002
from July 29 - August 1, 2002
6. Spiritual growth
and deeper commitment of our church members
Thank you very much for partnering
with us.

Dear Pastor Martin and
brethren at Grace Baptist Church,
Joyful greetings in
our Savior's precious Name! It is our prayer that you are all
overflowing with the joy of the Lord and His blessings.
We just want to share
with you some more of the Lord's blessings upon us and the ministry here.
We praise the Lord for helping us to close the deal on a piece
of land in Anlong K'ngan. We are now working on the land title
and at the same time for a building permit. We do not have money
for building yet but we are hopeful that the Lord will provide just as He
did for the land purchase. The first stage of improvements include
land filling, fencing and digging a well. After that we will build
a small house and a baptistry! Then the actual church building.
As provision comes, of course.
Why baptistry
first? Right now we are teaching the believers about baptism and
church membership. How many do we expect to baptize? Maybe
20, 30 or 50 believers!
At Grace Baptist
Church - Phnom Penh, we have just moved our meeting place to our
home. We rented the adjacent apartment and knocked down
some walls to make room for a bigger place of worship.
Prior to the moving, we had our last baptism at the old meeting place.
We baptized Bro. Dara and his wife. They have both been coming to
the services without missing since the very first time they came as
walk-in visitors. They have started to bring their whole family to
church also. Praise God!
On our first Sunday in
our new place, we baptized Bro. Sok Liep. He is one of those whose
house has been burned but did not like to move to the relocation area
because he can not find a job to do there. He drives a
motor bike taxi (we call it motodup) for a living.
Attendance in our city
church is picking up again! We go through this tough cycle of
increase and decrease of attendance about three times a year.
With the Lord's blessings, we see some growth in the number of people
coming to church. Improvement in the quality of the
spiritual life of those brethren who remain after each cycle are also
evident. Sometimes it is very nerve breaking having to go
through these cycles. These are the times when your prayers for us
are really the ones carrying us through. We sincerely appreciate
you all for being there for us. We know we can keep on keeping on
because of your fervent prayers and faithful support.
Cambodia Baptist Bible
College has just finished half of this school year. Two more young
ladies from our church, Chea Ang and Bunni are entering as first years.
Please pray for these students and the Lord's continued provision for
CBBC. We are all in eager anticipation for our first graduation
this July. Two students from Grace Baptist Church, Pilot and Phally, will
be among the first graduates and we are excited about this. God has
been truly good to us and the ministry here. May all glory be to
him alone.
Again, allow us thank
you for your unceasing prayers and support. May God's
richest blessings be upon you all.
Yours for Cambodian
souls,
Mike & Daisy

Dear Prayer Partners,
We trust that you are
all doing well and are joyful in the ministries you have for the Lord.
Our family is doing
fine. Healthwise, Daisy is much better than she was the past two
weeks. We appreciate very much everyone of you who have prayed for
her. Please continue to remember her in your prayers. A
preacher with a smiling healthy wife always functions 100% much better.
Grace Baptist Church,
Phnom Penh is still keeping on. Attendance has been down the past
two weeks due to the local district elections the other week and the
Chinese Lunar New Year this week. A great encouragement is that we have
more people come to church than we normally do on days like these.
Yesterday, we were blessed with one young lady being baptized.
GBC, Phnom Penh is
having a rather weird problem we need your prayers for. As most of
our members are young people, we are always in constant apprehension
especially about our young ladies. It is still customary here in
Cambodia for parents to arrange the marriage of their children, usually to
unbelieving spouses they barely know. Generally, Cambodian girls
are submissive to their parents' wishes. Being Christians they
find themselves in a position where they either obey their parents and
try to make the best of what has been laid before them or to disobey
and runaway from home. This month, we are facing the
prospect of losing two 17-year old girls in this type of marriage. What
would you do if you were the girl? How about being their
Preacher?
We have some special
blessings at Grace Baptist Church, Anlong K'ngan. In our first
three services, we met under the open blue skies. Well, your
prayers for us has been answered in a miraculous fashion. The
Director of the nearby experimental research farm has generously allowed
us to use one of their vacant buildings for free. Praise God!
We held our services this Sunday in the said building.
(Please see attached picture.) Thank you very much for your prayers
for GBC-Anlong K'ngan.
We still need your
continued prayers for this ministry though. We are in the process
of verifying ownership of a piece of land we believe would be suitable
for a church multi-purpose building. Land purchase, development
and building construction entails much expense and time. Please
pray that we will be able to avail of the rent-free facility until we
have our own land and building. In a country like Cambodia,
anything could happen overnight but your prayers always work wonders.
Allow us to thank all
of you again for fervently praying for us and for sharing of your
precious financial resources to help us keep on going in the ministry to
the Cambodian people. "My God shall all your need
according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." (Phil. 4;19)
is our prayer for all of you.
Yours for Cambodian
souls,
Mike & Daisy

Dear Prayer Partners,
Greetings from
Cambodia! We trust that you are all excited and enjoying yourselves
in the Lord's work and His blessings.
God continues to bless
us and the ministry here. We had our very first couple saved here
at Grace Baptist Church, Phnom Penh this first month of 2002. That
is a remarkable blessing for us as most of our members are all teen-agers
and single young adults.
We finally stopped our
7th-day Baptist Church on the last week of 2001. Last January 13,
2002, we started services in the open field where the people that come to
our Saturday services were moved. We now have the largest church
building in the world, the whole sky above for a roof and the grassy
earth beneath for our floor! We praise God for over 110 adults and
about 150 children who came to worship God and listen to His word last
Sunday. About 30 souls confessed Christ as Savior that day!
To God be the glory!
We are working out a
deal to buy a piece of land to build a church in the new location.
Please help pray for us as we do not have the full amount for what
we need yet. Other than the actual cost of the land purchase we
also need more money for landfill and the actual building construction.
It is our prayer that we can have our own building to worship in before
the summer heat intensifies.
We appreciate you all
for your unceasing prayers and faithful support for the ministry to the
Cambodian people. It is our sincerest prayers that the Lord will
greatly bless you all.
Yours for Cambodian
souls,
Mike Valdez
P.S. - If you
wish to see more pictures of the ministry here, please let me know and I
will send you more pictures through e-mail.

The fire that struck
the homes of our brethren who come to our Saturday services has brought
some complicated twist in our ministry to these people. Last
Saturday, we had over 210 people come, just a little less than what we
normally have. Many stayed home for various reasons.
Some waited for food stuff distributed by humanitarian
organizations. Others were scared to leave their home for fear that
some evil-minded people might deliberately set their homes on fire just
like they did to Sok's rented house. Sok is one of those with whom
we have had original contacts in the community. Perhaps there
are those who did not come to church because they are questioning why
they have to suffer some more. It is not uncommon for people here
to think and believe that their misfortunes were cause by angry spirits
or departed loved-ones because they even entertained the idea of
accepting a "foreign God".
A few days after the
fire, many of those whose houses were burned were moved to the place
where we intend to buy land and start a new church. We were hoping
that the government will move everyone to the new place but we do not see
that coming as of this time. Now we have two groups of people in
two separate places (20 kilometers apart from each other) to minister to.
This did not only complicate the problem of lack of finances but also the
problem of more workers. It is really a situation where we might
say we are being "pressed beyond our measure" but we know that
God always has a wise purpose in what He allows to come our way.
Please continue to
pray for us and our Cambodian brethren. Their great spiritual and
physical needs before us require much heavenly wisdom for us to be able
to minister to them effectively. We appreciate all of you who have
been supporting and praying for us. God bless you.
Yours for Cambodia,
Mike Valdez

Last Monday, a terrible fire has gutted the homes of some of the
poorest people here in Phnom Penh. This is where our
brethren who come to our Saturday services are from. While many
of our people's homes were spared from the fire, many others have
lost their homes. The houses were built with very light
construction materials and as a result the spread of the fire was so
sudden. Many of those who escaped from the fire managed to
take with them just the clothes they were wearing.
We do not know of any casualties among our people but we still do
not know where some of them moved temporarily. Among
those severely affected is Sok Liep. Sok Liep has five
children with the youngest being less than two years old.
His wife is pregnant and is almost full term. Please
help pray for these brethren. Please pray for us too that
we will have wisdom in dealing with a situation like this.
We appreciate your prayers very much.
Yours for Cambodia,
Mike Valdez
